The CNTs used in this work were multi-walled (MWCNTs, from FutureCarbon ), produced via Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) on a metal catalyst (Fe). They had an average outer diameter of about 8–17 nm and consisted of 5–9 walls (see Fig. 1); their length is in the range of several micrometers (1–10 μm).

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in industry, but their environmental impacts on soil microbial communities are poorly known. In this paper, we compare the effect of both raw and acid treated or functionalized (fCNTs) multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on soil bacterial communities, applying different concentrations of MWCNTs (0 µg/g, 50 µg/g, 500 µg/g and 5000 µg/g) to a soil .
Results: Our results showed that at 50 μg/mL, bean plants exhibited tolerance to the multi-walled carbon nanotubes whereas at 250 μg/mL and 500 μg/mL of MWCNTs plants showed reduced growth and development and even plant death. Aliquots of 750 μg/mL and above of MWCNTs lowered the microbial biomass.
